humor.
“The
next time someone tells you they’re having a deja-vu,
look at them with a straight face and say: ‘You told
me that already.'”- Karyn Ruth White
Comedians can make us laugh at even the most tragic of events.
They help us cope in a time of terrorist threats, budget deficits,
fast-paced technology, cranky coworkers and crazy drivers.
Can anyone learn to think like a comedian? The answer is yes;
anyone can learn to be funny if they develop the right mindset.
Now you can too!
Using
Jay Arthur’s mastery of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)
and Karyn Ruth White’s 20 years of experience writing
and performing comedy, together they have created a 192 page
book to help you learn how to think like a comedian.
Wouldn't
it be great to "channel" your favorite comedian
when you're dealing with an especially difficult customer
or family member? You can! There's an exercise called: "Channeling
Robin Williams", which Jay used to help him deal successfully
with his teenage stepdaughter.
And, if you want to become a standup comedian, you'll find
a step-by-step guide to creating and developing humor. There
are four main steps:
- Prospecting
for Humor - How to develop your comedy radar.
- Mining
the Humor – Learn creative lateral thinking.
Comdians ask themselves: "What's this like?" For
example: How is dating like a laundromat? Learning comedy
is a great way to develop your creativity.
- Refining
the Humor - Next, comedians distill their thinking
down into the traditional joke format: setup-punchline-punchword.
"Take my wife…please!"
- Presenting
Humor - What point of view, attitude, and character
would be best for this particular joke. Are you mad, sad,
or glad? Is it hard, weird, scary, or stupid? What do you
do when you bomb? The book has detailed examples about how
to develop a joke from start to finish.
The book is full of humor from Karyn Ruth's
joke file.
“In
an effort to relieve road rage, AAA wants us to flash each
other the peace sign. The good news is, we’re halfway
there.”- Karyn Ruth White
As members of the Colorado Chapter of the National Speakers
Association, Jay and Karyn Ruth have included a chapter about
how to add humor to any speech; it's ideal for corporate presenters
or anyone who speaks to groups.
Anyone can do it. It's up to you to decide how far you'll
take your comedy career...Maybe just to a backyard barbeque,
to the company boardroom or all the way to comedy club.
